Static Overview

This is the story of a very special house that has seen a lot of changes since it was built in 1914.  Our company, Dovetail Construction, has been in the business of high performance and sustainable renovation since 1987.  The scope of the renovation is in fact “monumental” and it actually sits on the renowned Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA.  The house was originally built for William Schwarzchild and designed by the architect D. Wiley Anderson.  It went from being a single family residence to the home of the Senior Center of Richmond thanks to the hard work from the ladies of the Junior League of Richmond.  As progress is made to take the house back to it’s original use as a single family home, we are fortifying it with the best resources, and technology available to make it last at least another 100 years.

A Glance in the Rearview Mirror

far-side
We miss you Gary Larson!

Dave, our tile man (from Satterwhite) checked out our blog and chastised me for being really behind which I warned him that I was.  He's right though and I am going to try and dutifully pick up the pace!  I couldn't resist reminding you (and myself) of where we have been-
The addition:

If someone asks you to build a windowless splitface block addition to a Monument Avenue house, you need to "just say no"...There are better ways!  Here's the inside once demolition had begun...

Here's the paint job and remember the original specifications said to "paint with white lead".  A lot of effort on our part to fix this, working to keep the environment and our employees safe.

Below is a dormer that was completely compromised (chopped up) to make way for a fire escape.

Actually there were a number of fire exits and they all pretty much looked like this:

Lot a work to do and at times we have been tempted to run for the door...
The quick release handle can be a real asset when leaving quickly.
